Building an everyday carry (EDC) loadout involves selecting items that not only support your mission to defend yourself and others, but also cater to your personal safety, preparedness, and convenience needs throughout the day. Whether you prioritize self-defense, emergency medical situations, or general utility, a well-curated EDC loadout can provide you with the necessary tools to navigate daily challenges that range from the mundane to the unimaginable extreme. In this article, we will explore five essential items that can form the foundation of your EDC kit.
The Firearm
A firearm is a powerful tool for personal protection and self-defense. No matter where you live in this country, It is important to familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding firearm ownership, training, and concealed carry permits. In my home state of Oregon, someone who carries concealed must have a permit issued by the state, your individual laws may vary and you may not even have to gain a concealed carry permit to do so legally.
When it comes to actual firearm selection, you should choose a firearm that fits your hand comfortably, is reasonably concealable, and meets your local legal requirements. While smaller is usually better from a concealment standpoint, you don’t want something that is so small that you can’t effectively use it. Carrying a spare magazine for your firearm might also be advisable if you have the capacity or desire to carry on. In a high-stress situation, a malfunction or the need for additional ammunition can arise.
You should also purchase a matching holster for your firearm and possibly your spare magazine. Kydex IWB and OWB options are great and last a lifetime and also provide you with a good layer of safety, and retention as you’re going throughout your daily business. I think it also goes without saying that you should also take the appropriate time and effort to train with your firearm and holster.
EDC Blade or Multitool
An EDC blade or multitool is a versatile tool for various daily tasks. While it's generally acceptable in nearly all of the country to carry a knife or some sort of blade on you without issue, there are some states that have restrictions on the size and type of knife you can carry.
Multitools are an alternative option to a traditional EDC folding knife or fixed EDC knife but they come with the major downside that they are much larger and more complex than knives. I personally carry a fixed-blade EDC knife in a holster but I still often carry folding blades when I need something more discreet or compact.
Medical Equipment
Including medical equipment in your EDC loadout demonstrates a commitment to preparedness and the ability to handle medical emergencies. Pack a compact first aid kit that includes essentials such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, medical tape, and any personal medications you may require. Consider training in basic first aid and CPR to enhance your ability to respond effectively in emergencies. While it might seem unlikely that you’ll need to use this type of kit, just remember that it’s probably far more likely you’ll use your medical equipment than your gun.
Notepad and Pen
Carrying a small notepad and pen is a practical addition to your EDC loadout. It allows you to jot down important information, reminders, contact details, or any other pertinent details that need to be recorded quickly. Choose a pocket-sized notepad that is durable and tear-resistant, along with a reliable pen that writes smoothly and is comfortable to use.
Putting together an EDC loadout requires careful consideration of your personal needs, legal requirements, and priorities. The items discussed in this article - a firearm, spare magazine, EDC blade or multitool, medical equipment, and a notepad with a pen - form a foundation for personal safety, self-defense, general utility, and emergency preparedness. Remember to comply with local laws, prioritize safety, and seek proper training to ensure responsible ownership and usage of these items. Your EDC loadout should evolve as your needs change, ensuring you are well-equipped to handle the challenges of everyday life.
