AR-15 Pistol Grip

Blog #227 The Best AR-15 Upgrades: Pistol Grips

POST DATE: Dec 5, 2022

The AR-15 platform is probably the most ubiquitous centerfire rifle design within the United States and for good reason. The AR-15 is lightweight, handy, reasonably accurate out to the middling distance, and of course, has been the standard infantry rifle for the US Military in one form or another for nearly 50 years. Most AR-15 rifles will come standard with a Colt/FN M16/A2 pistol grip which, while not bad on its own, leaves a bit to be desired if you’re fine-tuning your rifle to fit you and your shooting needs. Today I’ll give you a few examples of what I think are much better options for your standard AR-15 pistol grip.

My go-to choice for muti-gun shooting pistol grips is almost always going to be a reduced-angle pistol grip like the TD MOD V2 Pistol grip. The reduced angle pistol grip is not only made from more durable billet aluminum, but the reduced angle also gives your wrist a much-needed break from being bent at an awkward angle if you use anything other than an A2 style stock. If you’re unsure of whether or not your build would benefit from a more comfortable reduced-angle grip, throw your dominant hand (the one you grip the pistol grip with) about a foot or so in front of you like you’re holding a vertical foregrip. Now rotate your grip like you would accommodate for the angle of a normal A2 style pistol grip, if this is more uncomfortable for you then a reduced angle grip like the Tyrant Designs MOD V2 Pistol Grip might be a good option for you.

Overmolded pistol grips are another great aftermarket option and just about every aftermarket parts producer out there has one including Tyrant Designs. Rubber-enhanced grips do away with the plastic-only design that you’ll find on a lot of less expensive aftermarket grips and instead pair the grip with a more comfortable and grippy rubberized surface. Those who shoot long-range precision with an AR-15 or AR-10 pattern rifle might benefit from the better ergonomics and comfort that many over molded pistol grips provide the shooter. Obviously, you’ll have to try out a couple of different types to see what works best for you and your style of shooting. Not every pistol grip is optimal for every situation. I’d love to hear your opinion below! What kind of grip angle do you prefer on your AR-15 rifles and why?
