Within the past 5 – 10 years, we have seen a growing rise in the popularity of pistol compensators. Here at Tyrant CNC, we have had our benchmark T-Comp available for Glock and SIG handgun models since 2019. We are not new to pistol compensators and their benefits at all, but some of our readers and shooters might be. So, what is a pistol compensator, where did they come from, and why do you need one?...
Before we answer where a pistol compensator came from it might be more helpful to address what they do for you as a shooter. If your semi-auto handgun has a threaded barrel – or one can easily be dropped in – then you have the capability to add a compensator (aka muzzle brake). Similar to muzzle brakes on rifles, a pistol compensator is meant to cut the recoil of your firearm, tame the recoil impulse, and reduce the muzzle from flipping so much so you stay on target. These all sound like positive attributes, which they are, but why do we want this?... We want all these elements that a pistol compensator affords us because it allows us to “shoot flatter.” We have all heard that phrase before and what it means to shoot flatter is to keep your sight picture on target more consistently, engage targets more quickly/repeatably, and manage your firearm more confidently. Whether this all translates into a competition we are shooting or a self-defense scenario, we want speed, faster engagement, a clearer sight picture, and less recoil.
Muzzle brakes of any kind were first introduced in the military for artillery. Since large military ordnance has significantly larger recoil than mere handguns or rifles, muzzle brakes were valuable so that artillery wouldn’t move when it was on the ground (literally shift and travel across the ground). This thought of less recoil, more on target, and better command of your weapon slowly trickled its way down to smaller weapons and firearms. First, smaller artillery then rifles, and eventually handguns. Pistol compensators began showing up on competition handguns because these shooters know the value in the speed of engaging targets and experiencing less recoil. Pistol compensators of the past were always custom, one-of-a-kind, and exhibited varying degrees of “success” as far as their lock-up on the barrel they were attached to. Now, many companies like us here at Tyrant CNC, have engineered pistol compensators that can easily be affixed to barrels with little to no tools, are extremely precise in their lock-up, and do a wondrous job mitigating recoil. Make sure to check out our T-Comp pistol compensators online. They truly are a work of art!
In the end, make sure to get out there training, honing your craft, and getting reps with your firearms, and likely Tyrant can help you along the way with some rad accessories.
