Blog # 244 - Bug Out Bag Essentials

Emergencies can happen at any time, from natural disasters to civil unrest or even a sudden job loss. While it's impossible to predict when a crisis will occur, you can prepare for it by having a well-stocked Bug Out Bag (BOB) that contains all the essential items you need to survive for at least 72 hours. In this article, we'll cover some of the must-have items that should be included in your BOB, such as a good bag, water filtration, food prep, first aid, lighting and communication, and shelter.

A good BOB starts with a sturdy and reliable bag to carry all your essential items. A surplus ALICE pack is an excellent choice, as it's durable, comfortable, and has plenty of compartments and pockets to organize your gear. It’s what I use, and throughout this article, I’ll be sharing items that I have in my current bug-out bag, but you can replace them with similar items that you like or prefer, just make sure you actually test it out before you try to use it in the field (especially any food you buy!)

Water is essential for survival, but in an emergency, clean water may be hard to come by. The Sawyer S3 water filtration system is an excellent investment, as it can filter up to 400,000 gallons of water and removes harmful bacteria, protozoa, and other contaminants which can save you in case you can’t find an easier source of clean drinking water. Food is also essential, and the MSR Pocket Rocket is a compact and lightweight backpacking stove that runs on propane or butane fuel canisters. It's easy to use and can quickly boil water or cook food in minutes. For food, I’ve been trying out various types of freeze-dried camping food and I think it's best suited for this application as it's lightweight, calorie dense, and can be a real mood booster if you’re stuck outside.

Injuries can happen during emergencies, so it's crucial to have a reliable first-aid kit on hand. The Blue Force Gear Trauma Kit NOW is a compact and comprehensive kit that includes essential medical supplies such as tourniquets, chest seals, and hemostatic gauze. In an emergency, communication is vital. While cell phones can be a great option for communication, they may not always be reliable. Radios, such as my Baofang radio, can be a valuable backup for communication in case cell phone service is down or unavailable. It's a versatile and affordable option that can transmit and receive both ham and GMRS frequencies.

A good shelter can keep you safe and protected from the elements. I don’t have a compact tent yet, so I lug around a child-sized tent and sometimes a tarp that I can use in tandem with some paracord to make a temporary shelter. Ideally, you won’t have to seek shelter out in the wild in an emergency but it always helps to be prepared. In a pinch, my lightweight sleeping bag can be used as an ad-hoc shelter or for its intended use if you’re in need of a warm place to sleep overnight.

When it comes to selecting a reliable emergency firearm for your BOB, the Chiappa Little Badger is an excellent choice. This single-shot, break-action rifle is lightweight and compact, making it easy to carry in your BOB. It also comes with a foldable wire stock that can be adjusted for length, making it customizable to your individual needs.

The Chiappa Little Badger is a versatile option for hunting or self-defense in a survival situation. One of the benefits of the Chiappa Little Badger is its simplicity. With only a few moving parts, it's easy to operate and maintain, making it an ideal option for novice shooters. It also comes with a durable and weather-resistant finish, ensuring that it can withstand harsh conditions. 22LR is also an affordable and lightweight round to carry with you and doesn’t take up nearly as much space as centerfire cartridges.

However, there are some cons to consider when selecting the Chiappa Little Badger as your emergency firearm. Being a single-shot rifle, it requires more time and effort to reload after each shot. This could be a disadvantage in a self-defense situation where quick follow-up shots may be necessary. It’s best to go with what you feel is necessary for your specific situation - a handgun and a few spare mags would not be out of place in a properly prepared Bug out Bag.

A well-stocked Bug Out Bag can make all the difference during an emergency. By having the essential items such as a good bag, water filtration, food prep, first aid, lighting and communication, and shelter, you'll be better prepared to face any crisis that comes your way. Remember to customize your BOB based on your individual needs and circumstances, and make sure to regularly update and maintain your supplies, check expiration dates, and test your gear in the field before you rely on it in an emergency situation. With a little preparation and foresight, you can be confident in your ability to not only survive but thrive during an emergency.
