When it comes to the world of firearms there are a lot of calibers to pick from – and cartridges, too! So, what is the difference?... A caliber is more of a broad statement. When someone says 30 caliber that can be referring to .300 Blackout, .30-06 Sprg, .308 Win, etc because they are all rounds using a 30 caliber bullet. Or, if someone refers to 40 cal that could be .40 S&W or 10mm because they both deploy a 40 caliber bullet. It might seem like semantics, but it does matter. When we discuss cartridges that is calling out a specific round that shouldn’t be misinterpreted with anything else. For example: .380 ACP, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP are all independent cartridges from each other.
So, if we are looking at prospective handguns for a new shooter, how do you identify what cartridge is right for you?... There are a lot of factors that go into answering that question. You need to figure out the discipline it will be used for such as recreation, defense, competition, or hunting. You need to identify how much capacity you might want in your handgun. Potentially the range or distance you want it to be effective at. Also, the cost of the cartridge you select matters if you will be shooting in any type of volume.
The most immediate factor that needs addressing is what discipline you want to use your new cartridge for. If you need a new handgun for defense you might entertain different cartridges than if you were looking from a recreational standpoint. While .22 Long Rifle would be great for recreation it’d poor for defense, and 9mm might be good for self-defense yet inadequate for hunting. So, knowing what you intend to use a cartridge for matters a lot.
Next, you might want to know the capacity – or the number of rounds – that a handgun would be able to carry in a given cartridge. For competitive shooting, you might be limited to what you are allowed to have in your firearm. Oppositely, if you are recreationally shooting you could have drum magazines, extendos, and all kinds of fun stuff. In regards to concealed carry, if your handgun is lacking in capacity you could always carry an additional magazine in your pocket. All things to consider when thinking about capacity.
Finally, you will want to assess at what distance you need your cartridge to be effective at and the cost of ammunition as well. For self-defense, you want your given cartridge to be effective in stopping a violent attacker should you need to defend yourself in a hair-raising life/death situation. While 10mm sounds strong and impactful for self-defense it is also cost-prohibitive to consistently practice and train with. So, 9mm is a more logical choice for self-defense. Conversely, 10mm is a great cartridge for hunting.
So, when you are choosing what pistol cartridge is right for you it boils down to many things. Cost, effectiveness, capacity, intended use, and availability. In the end, make sure to get out there training, honing your craft, and likely Tyrant can help you along the way with some rad accessories.
