We have discussed in previous articles how popular the new on-the-scene pistol from Springfield Armory – the Prodigy – has been since its release a couple of months ago. It brings a lot of the modern features current shooters are looking for in a pistol today. It is easily optics-ready, high-capacity, hails from a strong brand, and is reliable. There is a lot to like about the Springfield Armory Prodigy. So, that begs the question... why would anyone pick a 1911 over the Prodigy (a 2011 series pistol)?

First, what are some reasons that people buy 1911 handguns in the first place?... For some people, it might be because of nostalgia. It has served the United States military (and numerous other countries) in numerous wars and conflicts throughout history. As much as the 1911 is a “meme” at times on the internet, it is difficult to deny that it is a storied handgun throughout history. The 1911 is also iconic because it was made by one of the most legendary gunmakers to have ever lived: John Moses Browning. So, the 1911 has nostalgia, history, an iconic creator, and accuracy as well. Being a firearm that is crafted from metal, it can be built to finite tolerances and is generally more accurate than a lot of polymer handguns even today. That is... until the model 2011 came along.

So, what is a model 2011 and how does it tie into the Springfield Armory Prodigy?... The Prodigy is a model 2011 loosely by design, and what typifies a 2011 is a lot of things. The model 2011 is becoming overwhelmingly popular because it is a modern, double-stack 1911 to make a loose approximation. It utilizes staggered, double-stack magazines for significantly higher capacity than a traditional 1911. It also has a modular, polymer frame attached to an all-steel slide and barrel. With a modular, polymer frame it can be stippled for increased dexterity, it can be changed out like an interchangeable grip panel (think of Glock or Smith & Wesson and their interchangeable grips), and it reduces the overall weight of the firearm tremendously. That means less weight to carry all day long and less weight to stabilize when the firearm is extended and aimed in front of you. Finally, most 2011 pistols including the Springfield Armory Prodigy are known for fiber optic, night sights, and/or suppressor sights; being optics ready; simply being absurdly accurate – even more accurate than the traditional competing 1911. There are also a lot of other features like a flared and beveled magwell, but those are most of the highlights. The only hesitation for most buyers might be the price tag. Most 1911s are roughly $1,000 or less while many 2011 pistols are $3,000 or more! Except for the Springfield Armory Prodigy which is retailing for around $1,600.

So, it boils down to how modern of a pistol do you want. Do you want to mount a red dot? Have lots of rounds on board? Then, the Springfield Armory Prodigy might be for you. If you really like history and nostalgia though, the model 1911 is still a very viable firearm in today’s world. All things to consider!
