Maybe it is because of cinema, TV, and films, but we all romanticize the idea of hiding firearms everywhere for those one-in-a-million “what if” moments. Whether we implement our fanciful ideas or merely BS with our friends about maybe doing it, we often overtalk these scenarios to a fault. When it comes to any firearm, we own there are a couple of dominant factors we must always maintain: 1) we have to always maintain control and safety of the firearm when it is in our hands, and 2) we must continue that control when it is out of our hands. This boils down to safe gun handling and weapon manipulation but also having the firearm in some type of safe or secure storage when it is not in our hands. So, what does that look like when people talk about truck guns?...
When people talk about truck guns, we often think of the ol’ dusty cowboy from Texas who has a rifle or shotgun hanging in the back window of their truck. A modern version of that image is the 9-5 dad who is commuting back and forth between the office and bringing his kids to soccer practice. How does he remain ever vigilant in taking his family’s protection and security into his hands? A common mistake is believing “your vehicle” is akin to a safe in your house; it is not. People constantly have their vehicles broken into and firearms stolen out of their unlocked center counsel, glove box, or another unsecured hiding place. If you want to have a truck gun – whether it is a tricked-out Glock with Tyrant components or an AR-15 PDW – you need to make sure it is secure inside your vehicle. Some people have lockable center counsels and glove boxes which are fantastic. If you do not, there are vehicle-specific safes you can buy and bolt down inside a vehicle.
You not only want to keep your truck gun safe from people who might want to steal it, but also curious children. Many lock boxes and safes nowadays have a biometric option so you can instantly and quickly access your firearm should the need arise. In this manner, your beloved truck gun is not only secure but also close at hand – the best of both worlds.
You may also want to identify your need for a truck gun before you dive in on an expensive safe or storage solution. Are you wanting a truck gun because you go hunting a lot and live in a more rural area? Do you want one for all of your competition guns when you travel to matches on the weekends? Or do you want one for your everyday carry (EDC) pistol? All things to consider when going down the rabbit hole of a truck gun!
