Throughout most of the country, we have successfully defeated the doldrums of winter, and are moving into spring and summer. We’re not intending to jinx ourselves, but with this pivotal change of seasons means a new style of carry and different daily adventures for all of us. If you are one of those weekend warriors who enjoys going camping with your family, hiking, or even being more adventurous with your dog walks you might want to consider new vehicles or modes of concealed carry.
If you happen to live in the heart of a large city, but still find a slice of nature in public parks they can often be over-crowded with people (you’re not the only one looking for an outdoor escape from the concrete grind). With that in mind, you may not want to open carry with so many people around. You also might want to reconsider on-person concealed carry because you could be wearing a lot less and lighter clothes (think tank top and shorts). While we are approaching “suns out, guns out” season, that means we will be sporting our awesome biceps and should not be open carrying next to someone’s family picnic. So, what are some close-at-hand carry options that are not on your body yet readily accessible?
The two main ideas that come to mind are carrying via a fanny pack or a backpack. My favorite is backpack carry because then you can also carry oodles of other things with you as well. I am personally not cool enough to pull off a fanny pack, but that is another increasingly popular way to carry in the summertime. I elect to go the route of a backpack also because it allows you to carry a greater variety of firearms. Where I live and enjoy the outdoors you have the same likelihood of seeing a characteristically “bad guy” who wants to rob you as you are to see a timberwolf. The goofy bad guy I might be able to scare off by merely brandishing my firearm (the ideal outcome in any hairy situation), but the wolf might actually require me to discharge my firearm until the threat is eliminated. This might be a stark example, but the overlying idea remains true. With a backpack I can carry a larger revolver or even a small PDW (Personal Defense Weapon) like the Springfield Armory SAINT Edge PDW. This compact yet powerful AR pistol actually fits in a backpack with no disassembly required.
I love getting outside on my days off because I believe we all have spent too much time cooped up indoors the past year. Also, not to always look for the potential bad in situations, but thinking outside the box and being as prepared as possible for danger is a good trait to simply keep stored in the back of your mind. Maybe don’t break the ice of conversations by going down the rabbit hole with ideas like these, but it's good to bear in mind. It’s always better to have and not need than need and not have, you know? Until next time, continually check out our blog, join our newsletter, and watch the website for new and exciting updates!
