The bulk of my shooting is done either with my Tyrant Designs equipped Glock because of the normally affordable nature of 9mm or one of my 5.56mm/.223 Rem rifles. The reason being that most people are shooting those guns and rounds is because of commonality, user-friendliness, and affordable rounds. Also, they are easy to upgrade, change, and alter to make them your own which Tyrant Designs has oodles of accessories for them. On occasion though I like to shoot big-bore revolvers because it can be a hoot to pop of a few rounds from a hand cannon. One of the newest hand cannons on the market is the Taurus Raging Hunter 460.

The Raging Hunter family of revolvers has been around for some time now being chambered in .38 Special/.357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .454 Casull. Taurus’ new offering of the .460 S&W Magnum cartridge is cool in my eyes because you can shoot .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull, and .460 S&W Magnum all out of the same wheelgun. The .45 Long Colt is a significantly milder recoiling cartridge if you want to enjoy your days at the range while .460 S&W Magnum and .454 Casull have the power and velocity to smack steel or big-game animals out at 100 yards! That versatility in a big-bore revolver is pretty rare to come by.

The Taurus Raging Hunter 460 is also intriguing because it has a Picatinny rail that is integral to the barrel for mounting red dots or extended eye relief scopes. So, if you want to add a Leupold DPP (Delta Point Pro), Trijicon RMR (Ruggedized Miniature Reflex), or a riflescope to your revolver you can easily do that without the assistance of a gunsmith. This will help you have faster target engagement and sight acquisition whether it is for defense or for hunting as the Raging Hunter name implies.

Another unique feature to the Taurus Raging Hunter 460 is that it boasts a double-latch cylinder. This extra safeguard to ensure better timing and more crisp lock-up is just another example of how Taurus has a discerning eye for quality with their revolvers.

While you can likely guess that the .460 S&W Magnum cartridge kicks like a Clydesdale, the felt recoil is mitigated quite a bit (from what it potentially could be) by the porting Taurus utilizes on the end of the barrel and the fact that the revolver weighs 3 ½ Lbs. Both were methodical design choices to make the shooting experience more pleasurable – even in the stout rounds of .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull, and .460 S&W Magnum.

So, if you are like me and love your Glocks and AR-15s, it might be fun to venture outside the box and give some wheelguns a try once in a while. I gave the Raging Hunter a shot (pun intended) and it was a blast (pun intended again)!
