The most famous weapon in art history Who would have ever thought that a rusted Belgian-manufactured Lefaucheux pinfire revolver from the 1890s would fetch an auction price predicted to be around $45,000-$56,000? On June 19th, this famous weapon owned by Vincent Van Gogh will go up on public auction to the highest bidder, and it's to take place in Paris. What makes this gun so famous? Beyond that fact that it was owned by one of the most famous painters of all time, it was also the gun used to kill himself. On July 27th, 1890, Van Gogh used the 7mm revolver to shoot himself in the chest. There were no witnesses and it has been reported he died some 30 hours later. The bullet was deflected by his rib cage and passed through his chest and was stopped by his spine. He walked back to the Auberge Ravoux, which was an inn he was staying at. Doctors could not remove the bullet and left him comfortable in his room while he smoked his pipe. He died the next morning, most likely due to infection. Dude, where's my gun at? If you're like me, you are probably asking yourself where has this gun been for over 100 years. Upon further research, I found out it was discovered by a farmer in the field where Van Gogh presumably shot himself. The gun was then given to the family that owned the Auberge Ravoux Inn, where Van Gogh spent the last few months of his life. It appeared publicly for the first time in 2016, at a Van Gogh exhibit in Amsterdam. Can you think of a more famous gun? Drop a comment!
