Welcome back to the 44th installment of my blog, in which I don’t claim to be an expert, in fact, the opposite. I’m a new user to the AR platform and want to share my findings and experiences as I go through and build rifles as well as being the Operations Manager at Tyrant Designs.

Roughly 15 million of all Americans have concealed carry licenses. These people gave some serious thought to the worth of being armed and prepared (legally) in case a situation arose where they had to protect themselves.

Let’s play out a scenario. For simplicity sake, you discharge your firearm “legally” and kill someone who was robbing you at gunpoint. If our justice system is true and fair like it claims, you will be acquitted of any wrongdoing. Life is never that perfect. Facts are not always so straightforward and people will have agendas against you outside of your control. Criminal litigation could cost you tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the length of the trial. Civil litigation could be even more costly, as the assailant's family might sue you for wrongful death. What can you do to protect your financial well being in a situation like this? Get conceal carry insurance to protect yourself.

Important things to look out for when buying conceal carry insurance.

1. It is worth speaking to your insurance agent to see whether you are currently protected under your homeowner's insurance or if you have some type of umbrella policy.

2. If your state has some type of stand your ground law, it will be less likely you will be facing any charges, anybody remember George Zimmerman?

3. Find out the coverage rates of the plans you’re looking at. Some policies will reimburse you instead of paying for your litigation up front.

4. Consider the fact that if you are engaged in a high profile legal battle, the costs might be much more than anticipated.

5. Find out if the plan provides you an attorney or allows you to pick one to represent you in court.

6. Does your plan include money for expert witnesses?

7. Will your policy pay if you are found guilty?

Only you can decide if insurance is right for you. To me it’s a simple decision, your gun is your insurance policy for your life and your insurance policy is for you to keep your same financial standing in the case you must discharge your firearm. If you think about it, always concealing and carrying will increase the odds that you may have to use your gun one day. Weigh your options and do what’s right for you and your family.
