Welcome back to the 52nd installment of my blog, in which I don’t claim to be an expert, in fact, the opposite. I’m a new user of the AR platform and want to share my findings and experiences as I go through and build rifles as well as being the Operations Manager at Tyrant Designs.

ITS MY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF BLOGGING FOR TYRANT! SOMEONE CONGRATULATE ME AND TELL ME I'M DOING A GOOD JOB OR TOM MAY FIRE ME! PLEASE!!!

I know many people will argue against carrying a gun at all. And no I’m not just talking about gun grabbers...

First and foremost I think this attitude is preposterous but I do respect everybody’s right to have their own opinion. This blog installment is for those of us that believe in carrying on a daily basis. I have one question for you, should you carry more than one gun?

My answer is simple, yes you should. Some might feel that this is balancing on the level of paranoia, but what is so wrong with being overly prepared. It’s not that you would need both guns BUT I believe having a reliable backup gun may, in fact, save you someday.

I’m not going to tell you what primary carry gun you should carry, that is a very personal decision. Some will like the concealability of a single stack like the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield or Glock 43. Others might opt for a full size with larger magazine capacity. Whatever you choose, just make sure you know that gun inside and out and you feel very comfortable when handling it.

Even though your primary carry will be very familiar to you, problems can still happen. Magazines are the weak point in the typical semiautomatic firearm. Feeding issues and jams can turn your firearm into a liability. Make sure to carry extra mags just in case you run into this problem.

In the case that the gun still isn’t functional despite having additional magazines, an extra pistol will come in handy. 2 is always better than 1.

In my opinion, a small wheel gun might be the best backup for your EDC. It’s small, concealable, and less likely to jam. Bonus points if you get one that has an internal hammer as it will be less likely to get caught on your clothing. It’s also well known that they are more resistant to dirt and lint. But any second gun will do.

Another important reason for a backup gun is the possibility of running out of ammo. This is even more likely if you are attacked by multiple people. According to the FBI, half of the violent crimes are committed by more than 1 attacker. Some may argue you can just carry one gun and reload, but it is far quicker and easier to switch to an already loaded second gun. If you are under duress, it may be likely that your nerves might not allow you to simply reload with impunity. Especially, for those of us that have never been in that type of situation ever before.

This is just my educated opinion that I have formed from various firearms educators. I’m curious to know do you think carrying a second firearm is necessary? Let me know in the comments below!
