Welcome back to the 4th installment of my blog, in which I don’t claim to be an expert, in fact the very opposite. I’m a new user to the AR platform and want to share my findings and experiences as I go through and build rifles as well as being the Operations Manager at Tyrant Designs.

Let’s talk Barrel twist!!!

Tyrant Designs AR-15 Grips and barrel twist

Barrel twist is important when it comes to the stabilization of projectiles. In light of the super bowl this Sunday, let’s make a football reference to demonstrate this. When Tom Brady throws a perfectly tight spiral, the football travels to its intended target accurately with a minimal loss of velocity. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have my “favorite” Chicago Bear, Jay Cutler. More often than not when Cutler throws the ball it won’t be that tight knit Brady spiral and will be inaccurate and most likely intercepted (Cutler sucks). But how do you take a bullet and have it spin so it is more accurate? Manufacture the inside of the barrel to twist the bullet as it travels out of the barrel.

Twist rate refers to the rate of spin in the rifle barrel, and is represented in inches per turn. It's important that your barrel has an adequate twist rate to stabilize the bullets you're shooting.

The lower the number of the twist, the faster the twist rate or the faster the bullet will spin. For example, a 1:9 twist will spin the bullet one revolution in every 9 inches, whereas a 1:8 twist will spin a bullet one revolution in 8 inches. Why is this important?

Depending on the weight of the bullet, different twist rates work better for certain bullet weights. On the lighter end 55-Grain bullets perform better with a twist rate of 1:9. While your heavier bullets 62 or 77-Grain perform better with a 1:7 or 1:8 twist rate.

In general, you can shoot whatever weight of bullet through whatever rate of twist of your barrel. But...it’s not ideal. You might as well get the most out of your rifle by knowing what your barrel twist is and purchasing ammo that will maximize this effectiveness. Its low hanging fruit here people! #freeaccuracypoints #nottalkingaboutXbox

Thats all I got for this week, get out there and get some range time in. Happy Shooting!

P.S. Have you seen the leaked photo of our upcoming Vertical Grip???? Word on the street (the office) is that it will be very very very economically priced. ( Its okay I had to google what that meant too). Check it out here and you might as well follow us to stay updated
